The engraving portrays the Portuguese Jesuit Álvaro de Semedo, and was published by Balthazar Moncornet (ca. 1600-1668). The three-quarter figure is enclosed within an oval frame, with a curtain as its backgdrop. On the upper left side, there is a coat of arms, while on the upper right, there are two plaited palm branches. Below, an inscription illustrates his role as a procurator upon his return to Europe from China. Jesuit Alvaro de Semedo was born in Nisa, Portugal, in 1585 or 1586. As a novice in 1602, he went to Goa on March 29, 1608, where he completed his education. After reaching Macao in 1610, he went to Nanjing in 1613. Three years later, he was imprisoned along with another Jesuit, Alfonso Vagnoni, during an anti-Christian campaign. He was exiled to Macao and stayed there until 1621. Such hardships persuaded him to change his Chinese name from 謝務祿 (Xie Wu Lu) to 曾德昭 (Zeng De Zhao).

He carried out his mission mostly in the central and southern provinces of China, but in 1625 he took an important trip to the north, in Xi'an, where he had the opportunity to see the newly-unearthed Nestorian Stele. In 1637, He returned to Europe and published Imperio de la China i cultura evangelica en èl por los religios [sic] de la Compañia de Iesus, a very detailed report. The book was reprinted several times and in many languages. This portrait was carried out before his departure from Rome in 1644. De Semedo returned to the East as the Vice-Provincial of the Jesuit mission in China. In this role, he worked in cooperation with the southern regimes supporting the Ming Dynasty; thus, he was imprisoned once the Qing dynasty took power. He was released a few months later, and spent the rest of his life in Guangzhou, where he died on July 18, 1658.
