The printed portrait depicts the Pope Paul III (1468-1549). It is the twenty-second piece of the XXVII Pontificvm Maximorvm elogia et imagines accuratissime ad vivum aeneis typeis delineate, which was published by Antoine Lafrery in Rome in 1568. Pope Paul III, whose original name was Alessandro Farnese, was a great patron of the arts and a man of culture. He was a great promoter of Church reform in the face of the Protestant Reformation, a historical period marked by strong religious tensions. In May 1542, he convoked the Council of Trent which opened in December 1545. In 1540, he issued the bull Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae to grant pontifical approval to the Society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. He supported the Jesuits' missionary activities in Africa, America and Asia. During the pontificate of Paul III, Jesuits Alessandro Valignano and St. Francis Xavier arrived in China.
